I do something similar, but I use planting pots, any that do NOT have a hole in the bottom... then I fill it about half full or so of lentils (from the bean dept in the grocery store, really cheap). Holds everything straight up nicely and I don't have to clean sand out of it when I'm ready to use it. Since I don't have a tool bench/organizer, I've done the same thing for some of my tools, works great.
The other item I use is called a "tool turnabout", from Pampered Chef". Nice thing about this little jewel is that it holds quit a lot of tools of different sizes in a small amount of space and functions like a lazy susan. Makes getting at things pretty convenient.

Subject: Re: [VFB] How do you organize your fly tying bench?
Hey, I do that, too. Only way to go for tall feathers. I got my vases at the local thrift shop for
about 50 cents. I usually put some sand in the bottom to weight it down a little and to make a
bigger mess when one of the cats gets in the tying room and tips it over.

next to the bench.
