Originally, we had two huge tables (4' by 12' each) in the basement for lego's, the train tracks, and what not. Once me and my sister lost interest in that, I took one of the tables and made it my tying table. Its so big, I can lay everything out in the bags right there and have everything in sight. No rummaging through drawers to find anything. To hold my thread, I took a piece of wood with dimensions of about 1/2'' by 1'' by 10'' and drilled holes into it. Then I cut shish-ka-bob skewers and glued them into there. Works like a charm. To hold my newly tied flies, I got a big styrofoam ball from cheap walmart christmas ornaments and put it on the end of a skewer, and put the scewer in an old "c" clamp for a vice. Have that near by and just stick the flies onto that until I need them for my boxes. For swaps, I throw the flies into a Plano box until all are tied, then i tag them and ship them out. Yeah....its still a complete mess. Just some ideas.

If you have enough room on your bench or a nearby shelf and you want to store your scissors, priers, bodkins etc -- just get a piece of thick styrofoam from a hardware store and stick then in that -- its cheap -- makes them a lot easier to find than rummaging around in a drawer -- and its easily replaced if it gets too full of holes.

I have a second piece of foam that I use to stick my newly tied flies in until the head cement is dried.

All my other stuff is in plastic drawers beside my tying bench -- except thread and floss which is small plastic drawers on top of my bench and hooks which are in a set of drawers that you can get at the hardware store for storing nails, screws, etc.

My bench is an old craft table -- no drawers but lots of surface area.
