This question usually answers itself when the hook-eye is inside the bead in the large end of the
hole, and you can't thread your leader. The small diameter hole always goes first.
You'll also notice that the bead has a harder time cornering a limmerick bend that a perfect bend.
A limmerick bend is usually on streamer hooks and has a short straight section before turning hard
into the bend. This radius is too tight for most beads, hence the effort to bevel the hole to make
the tight turn. The perfect bend is a single radius bend, so once the bead is past the barb, it
won't jam up on the bend radius. As was mentioned before, sometimes the larger diameter hole helps
the bead clear the barb as it makes the turn.
Coneheads were developed to make the turn easier, as the cone has a very large hollowed out back
end. THese are better for larger flies, like buggers and streamers. On small flies, nymphs and
such, a bead is still the way to go. I have a dremel handy with a cone bit to open up beads a wee
bit so they turn the corner easily.
The hollowed out rear section of a conehead is also good for hiding your final wraps and whip
finish, thus protecting it from teeth.

I have a question to pose on the proper application of bead heads. For beads that have a larger hole
on one side than the other, should one slide the bead on with the large hole towards the eye of the
hook? Or with the smaller hole at the eye? The few people I've asked have been split on this
question.
I'm getting ready to tie up a bunch of GRHEBH for my father-in-law, as well as for a swap and I want
to make sure they're right. Is one way more correct than the other?
