I'm looking for suggestions on how to keep them from sliding over the hook eye -- something simple and not time consuming -- otherwise I might just as well go back to winding chenile on the head instead of beads
I stumbled upon exactly the same problem. My solution is to tie the body first, making sure it is bulky enough to stop the bead. Whip finish. Then slide the bead over the eye, restart the thread (sometimes using a 3/0 or even Size A at this point, in a color to match the bead), and build up the head to hold the bead in place. For oversized beads or if you want a particularly small head, a wrap of chenille or similar material can be added.
