Just my .02. I tied with regular metal tube bobbins for years and years, cussing and groaning. Kind of pathetic, really.
In a recent lodge stay, a fly tyer friend was trying to tie using my bobbins and walked into my room, shaking his head ruefully. "I've got to give you one of my ceramic bobbins." And he did.
He is a professional fly tyer and has used them all, and his favorite for lightness and especially for balance is the original Tiemco Standard (the straight line model, not the one with the offset spool holder). I have seen the Tiemco on sale for as low as $14.
Anyway, working with one of these has made me a much less grumpy fly tyer. And if you know me, that's an accomplishment.
