I don't understand how the machine makes a difference, but my original Krups that I got 15 years ago cratered and the replacement just doesn't do as good a job.� It's still good, but not 'killer' like the other machine.�
If I might offer up a recommendation: try a Swiss cold water process brewer. It's really a simple device, basically a container to hold a pound or so of finely fresh ground coffee. In the bottom there is a hole plugged by a rubber stopper, and separating it from the coffee is a heavy felt filter that fits into a recess.
You put the ground coffee in, fill the container with water, and leave it sit overnight. Then you pull the plug and drain the filtered coffee concentrate into a couple of canning jars for the refrigerator.
Making a cup of coffee is as simple as putting some concentrate into a cup and adding hot water. Hard to beat the convenience.
It makes the richest, smoothest cup of coffee imaginable. You can even turn grocery store pig slop into something that tastes like $9/pound coffee. You can vary the strength just by increasing the proportion of concentrate to water. In a desperate situation, you can also administer intravenously. *g*
A huge benefit to this process is that a pint to quart container of concentrate will make superb coffee for an entire camping trip.
