Fearless Flyboxers,

I was at the flyshop today, getting supplies to tie Whitock's Near'Nuff Crayfish. While there, noticed the colored glue gun sticks that people use for making egg pattern flies. (available in orange, pink, red, neon red)

I asked Chris at the shop if he'd ever fished with those, but he said no, then offered a tip. If you take a red glass bead (the kinds with the silver centers are particularly nice) and either glue or lightly tie it onto a hook, then surround it with a round sphere of glue gun glue, it makes a very realistic translucent egg complete with the darker reddish yolk. Also, the glue itself never gets really hard, has a 'give' that might be convincing enough to have the fish hold on a second or two longer.

I tried this with a red bead and clear glue at home, and was impressed by the results. What I wasn't impressed with was the mishapened, definitely not spherical blob I produced with the glue gun. Definitely not the Gauguin of the Glue Gun.

Anyone know the technique for producing a good spherical glue gun egg blob?

A followup question to, uh, followup next week.
