I have not tried to dye black..in water color, you can make a "palate gray"
by mixing together all of the colors on the palate that you've been working
with. Supposedly, this would also work with kool aid, you'd have to add one
package of each of the primary and secondary colors for this to happen. As
previously stated, I've not tried it, but intend to. as to the vinegar, I
use whatever vinegar I have in the house, and right now it is white but
previously it was cider and there was no difference in the end result.
As to Rit dye, there is always, with any dye, even Vienards (yup..I dye
with that too) some spillage and leaching of the dye the very first few
times that you wash the material dyed. This is to be expected. You must
always dye the color so that it is a bit darker than you ultimately want it
to be. It will look lighter when it is dry and some will wash out (same as
doing watercolor..the colors become less deep when it is dry). Hope this
helps. Joyce

PS: go to http://www.flyshop.com and do a search for kool aid dying in the
archives. One of the posts there had a whole list of web sites concering
dyeing, and it was there that I picked up a nice color sheet where the lady
had each kind of kool aid and a bit of yarn, one white, one tan, which she'd
dyed with the colors of kool aid.
