When I mix dubbing, I try and get one skein that is lighter and
one a bit darker and one the actual color that I want, then blend small
amounts of the lighter and darker with the main color. I believe that this
is more effective on the stream as colors in nature are always a combo of
different hues.
One of the slickest tricks I've used to mix yarns and other materials into custom dubbing is to buy two dog grooming brushes, the 1-1-1/2" x 6" type that have metal pins set into a rubber base and a wooden handle.,
For best results cut your yarns and other ingredients (like flash materials) into 1-1/2" pieces and store separately in plastic bags.
Put a bunch of this and a bunch of that on one of the grooming brushes, then drag the other brush through the materials. Do this repeatedly back and forth between the two brushes until the yarns are completely pulled apart into individual fibers and evenly blended.
Add additional colors or materials to shift the color to your liking. When you are done, you will have the equivalent of about three bags of dubbing in the first batch.
