mainly depends on the size of the fly/bug, and the coarseness of the deer hair. For tying elk hair caddises or Goddard caddises, 6/0 is fine. For a 2/0 or larger deer hair bug, I would suggest flat waxed nylon, although there are those that prefer dyneema (GSP) or kevlar threads.
