I actually use a thread base for spinning
also. It does make the hair not spin as freely but when I use the
head cement on my half hitches between each clump it soaks down the thread and
holds the deer hair a little better. Makes a more solid bug for me.
It can be challenging to get used to if you like spinning on a bare shank.
I haven't even watched my deer hair videos yet so I don't know the way the
experts show you. This is just the way I prefer and I've seen some of the
tiers in my club teach the same way.
