Patrick, dubbing is fur stripped from the skin with the fingers, such as hares ear and mole or synthetic fibre like seals fur substitute. You take the dubbing between your thumb and forefinger and spin it on to waxed tying thread then wind the resultant "rope" onto the hook to form a body or thorax for the fly. A common effective fly tied using this dubbed body and thorax would be Gold ribbed hares ear.
