The Carey Special was originated by Dr.Lloyd A Day of Quesnel B.C. and Col.
Carey about 1925. The original name was Monkey-face Louise. Dr. Day came up
with the idea and had Col. Carey tie the first pattern. The original
dressing was as follows:
Tail Ground hog hair
Body Ground hog hair
Rib Black silk floss reverse wound
Hackle Three brown phase Chinese pheasant rump feathers
This fly was originated to imitate caddis pupa as they were rising through
the water column to hatch. It has become a very popular pattern for B.C.
lakes and is tied in in many variations of body materials. The key to tying
this fly is the heavily hackled pheasant rump collar.
