Just picked up my mail for the first time in some weeks, so I am a bit late
on this one.

I you are thinking of fishing bigger lakes where you will be drifting you
could consider getting a drouge. This is a small parachute like device that
is attached to the side of the boat. The idea is that as the boat is
drifting the drouge will slow you down to a very slow crawl. Depending on
where you place the drouge it can also be very valuable in getting the boat
to drift striaght so that you can fish the flies all the eay in with two
people in the boat. I would only use the drogue is small winds to start off
with so that you get used to it and then progress. Watch out for snags in
moderate winds on big lakes as the side of the boat will be pulled lower and
you are risking sinking if the waves are too high. All in all this is a
very safe methood of slowing a boat down to a really slow crawl and still
covering some ground while you are fishing.

But on a small lake, with only electrics, or small gas motors the wakes are
not large enough to swamp a boat. And the only way to fish chironomids or
other still water patterns slowly is by double anchoring.

And this is not double anchoring for an overnight stay, this is bad double
anchoring without much scope on the anchor lines, to keep the boat stiller
than it would be without the anchors.

Thanks for the reminder, as we may need to remember this on bigger lakes,
since double anchoring is quite common for fly fishing.
