---There's a book, that I can't find just now, 101 fly tying tips, or some such title. 
 The author addresses these little rings and such to hold back hair, hackle, etc.  
Just take a bit of craft foam and punch an appropriately sized hole in it.  place the 
little ring you've created over the thread and the bobbin holder BEFORE you start 
tying.  Then it will slide right on over the head of the fly without getting the 
thread in the way.  

They work real good.

If you fergit to put it over the bobbin holder first, then cut a slot in it.  It don't 
work as good, but still helps.
