I've found that my casting always suffers when I start trying too hard to get more distance. Casting is more about timing than strength. Letting the rod do the work. I could probably beat John Wulff in an arm wrestle, but I'm sure I can't out cast her!

There are lots of things that start going wrong when you are trying to hard. Loops open up. Hauls made with too much power create tailing loops. But a well timed cast with just the right amount of effort (which is usually less than you think you need) will shoot out an amazing amount of line.!

So when I want to cast out a lot of line I start by relaxing and trying to get my timing perfect.

SJ,

Do you know how to haul the line? Hauling and double hauling do help on longer casts, keeping the line speed up.

I have this problem every time i go fishing with my 7 wt. in that I cannot cast any more than 70 ft. Now this is with my Sage 7 wt. which happens to cast very well inside of 70 ft. but no more line outside of it. This is problematic because whenever I am on a lake and am trying to cast to spooky pike/muskies/smallies in clear water i need a relatively long casting distance so i can retrieve for a long distance as well...If i happen to use a 6 wt. instead of the 7 wt line on a 7wt. flyrod, will it improve my distance any more?

Streamer Swap pple: Flies will be in the mail on August 21st.
