Another thing that smells very nice is pipe tobacco. I "let Prince Albert out of the pouch...," and put some in a small ziplock bag punched full of holes and spread it around in the drawers where I have "stuff" that I want to keep the bugs away from.
This has worked adequately for me over the years.
Now, I must admit that I never thought of using my pipe tobacco as a bug deterrent, but when I had hunting dogs I used to mix tobacco stems and stalks that I got from a local tobacco farmer in with the straw bedding and the dogs never got fleas.
Even though I have since quit smoking I believe there is still a pouch of tobacco around here that I can throw in the materials box.
