Hi Gary, 

A guideline that's been helpful for me when tying nymphs and emergers
has been to match the color of the stream bottom.  Some are
tan/brown, some are olive, and many are various shades of gray. 
Usually the local bugs that live in a stream will have adapted their
colors to the environment through natural selection.
