There's an interesting little book out called "Tying With Kreinik Products." which talks about using various colors and textures of thread on flies. It's written by Prof. Steeves, who I've noticed on several lists, including Ultimate Fly Tying and Global. . . Additionally A.K. Best has a couple of articles on using their silk dubbing and silk thread.
Kreinik products are threads and braids for needlepoint sewers. I've run out and spent a small fortune on the stuff. there's a million different metallics in 1/2 million different sizes and textures. It works for bodies, ribbing, whatever. Even for wing cases(silk ribbons). Dr. Steeves has been such an advocate of the stuff that the Kreinik company has started producing a line of fly tying specific colors and sizes in all of their product lines. Check at your local sewing shop (art needlework) or at fly shops to see if they have it. Michaels Craft stores carry a small selection.
