Without going into the various "shades", what do you feel are the most prevalent colors used in fly tying when imitating both aquatic and terrestrial insects.


This thread has become more 'what colors do you prefer in your fishing' so my answer is in that vein. I made a list of flies I felt were my 'go-to' patterns. I would feel very naked without the 14 flies that made the list.

Of the 14, half had BLACK as the primary color. One brown pattern had black as the secondary color.

There were also three patterns using greens as primary, one mottled brown, one reddish-brown, and one grey.

It's hard to say how much of these results were particular to the waters and trout species for which I fish, but in looking at the list, black seems to jump out as my most effective color.
