Joyce, you are absolutely right! It does make a difference. There's no doubt about it. Your theroy works. Olive is probably the single most nature imitating color i think. Combined with the materials most trout flies are tyed with, it makes a great all around undercolor. JMTCW, maRK

I know it is "old fashioned" but I like to tie with the color thread that I
want the main body hue to be. When you look at insects, you will notice a
common color theme running through their bodies. Thus, when I wrap herl, I
want any thread that is showing to match the color of the insect I'm trying
to imitate, mostly yellow or gold, rusty dun, olive. Or, if I want the
insect to stick out and look like it has blood in it, then I use red
thread..it does, I think, make a difference in the way that the fly looks to
the trout in the water. I can't prove it, but many of my customers claim
that my flies catch more fish than do those of the competitors..and I think
the main difference is the foundation color of the thread. Just my 2 cents
