Well, I guess I should tell you all. I may have been fly fishing since the 70's and haven't really looked to go with all the name brand items that are on the market, well maybe I should change that. I do have a T & T rod, Salmo model, which hasn't been out of it's case to fish with yet. I do own a Hardy Featherweight reel that I used for my 4 weight line, I didn't like the "clicker" on it so that's in the drawer now in it's fancy case. I now use the Martin 65 (is that considered a brand name?) I managed to buy quite a few of them since they don't make the 65 anymore. In fact they don't even make Martin anymore, which was also my large (8/9 weight) reel, the MartinMG9 (Does anyone remember that reel?)
My favorite rod is the White River Dogwood Canyon rod (yes, you can own one too from Basspro for about 59.00 :) My best line is the Cortland 444. I do have a collection of those spare spools for the 65 with all the lines needed in 4,5,6 wgt lines, including double tapered, weight forward and sink tips. I do have that model rod in a 4,5, and 8 weight along with other inexpensive rods.
I do tie my own leaders, most of the time and my tippet is Seaguar Flourocarbon tippet material. I tie my own flies, that I will say, is where I do spend all of my spare money and time. I've got more tying material then a lot of the shops, mainly because I use to deal with the local shops. Hooks I have just about every Mustad style (for tying) in all the sizes. (down to 28's in the drys, even though I can't see that small anymore). When I was able to work I use to spend every last cent on buying good tying material and hooks. My whole belief was that it isn't the fancy rod or reel that's going to catch the fish, but it is important to tie a good fly.
I realize that this letter may stir up some ideas about the "quality" of those more expensive rods and reels, the comfort of casting, the feel of the cast and things like that. I guess it's all what you're use to having and using.
So maybe one of these days I may just take that T&T rod out of it's case and use it. The reel I use for saltwater and large freshwater fishing is the Pflueger Supreme model # 1890, again not the most expensive reel around (52.50 spare spool 23.75), but I think it catches fish just as well as any of those expensive ones.
My favorite fly is the Olive beadhead woolly bugger (GreyGhost is just my nickname)
Happy Thanksgiving to all
