This correlation can be roughly approximated with a turbidity tube.  It's
not an instrumented approach like the nephelometer, but if you just want a
rough order of magnitude of the logarithmic scale, it'll do.

for info on how it relates to the instruments and secchi disks.  

Then look at:
http://clean-water.uwex.edu/wav/monitoring/turbidity/tubedirections.htm
for the rough scale of distance vs. visibility.
