Mike, it matters because when the water is to turbid, it messes with the fishes gils. Causes them to clog and have a very hard time doing thier job, (allowing a fish to breath). And at a certain point it can actually kill fish, when there is just simply to much particle pollution in the water. We, (TGF/TU) are in the 4th or 5th year now of a suit of the DEP (city of N.Y.) over this problem on the Esophus Creek in the Catskills. It finally looks as though we are going to win this one, and get an out of court settlement. The city simply can not afford to losse this one and have to pay millions in fines, plus all court and lawyer cost. It's still going to cost them a pretty penny, but it beats the alternative for them. They should of never thought they could take TGF/TU on, LOL. mark

Turbidity refers to the amount of suspended particles of soil, etc. in the water, i.e. the higher the turbidity, the muddier the water. Example: Take a jar and put a couple tablespoons of loose dirt in it and then fill with water and shake. It'll cloud up. Let it sit awhile and the dirt will sink to the bottom leaving the water once again clear.

This correlation can be roughly approximated with a turbidity tube. It's
not an instrumented approach like the nephelometer, but if you just want a
rough order of magnitude of the logarithmic scale, it'll do.

Check out:
http://www.waterwatch.org.au/library/module-4/turbidity.html#3
for info on how it relates to the instruments and secchi disks.

Then look at:
http://clean-water.uwex.edu/wav/monitoring/turbidity/tubedirections.htm
for the rough scale of distance vs. visibility.

Be cool, don't drool...

Anyone on the list know of a reference relating
nephelometric turbidity units to distance of
visibility in inches?
