I knew this was gonna be a good topic.....Nothing really to do with flyfishing but I had to laugh.....!!Last spring, I took my youngest (14 at the time) to my beloved White to do some fishing. Now, I had left the flyrod in the truck and grabbed my trout rod with Mitchell reel. Sara had her Rhino Rod outfit. The reel was like the old Zebco 22 we (or most of us) started out with. Anywho...the poor kid was casting to beat heck, doing everything i was telling her as far as retrieve (speed up or slow down, drop your rod etc...you get my drift.) After a few "hangups", which Dad deftly got her out of, she got herself into a real pickle. I had her take my rod and after a quick lesson on open face reels, i then went and spent a few minutes "desnagging" her lure.
She was casting along, expressing her hate of an open face reel, checking out what i was doing out of the corner of her eye. (To date...she never caught anything on her rod andshe's had it 2 years.) I got the lure freed up and checked for frays in the line and thought...wow., I hadn't used one of these outfits in a long time. So I cast....second cast and a 2 pound smallie hit like a freight train!! Though i told her i took the hex off the rod and reel, she reeled in mine and tossed it in the weeds on the riverbank and muttered a couple of things i can't post on the list....! Poor kid...we do have a laugh about it even now and as the winter really hits, we both can't wait for the opener in April!!!! Maybe as I start tying, i'll have a new flyfishing partner???
