Coal-bed methane wells produce far more water than gas. Hitting the coal bed methane targets the Bush energy planners set for Wyoming's Powder River Basin will require enough pumping to cover the state of Rhode Island with a foot of water.
Ranchers call this "killer water" because is so high in saline content that when it interacts with soils, it kills most plant life. Much of the soil is damaged permanently. You can imagine the impact it has on fisheries.
In the Powder River basin alone, area ranchers and recreationists will have to accept:
51,444 new coal bed methane wells
17,000 miles of new roads
20,000 miles of new pipelines and 5,300 mile of above ground power lines
278,000 acres of destroyed topsoil and vegetation
disposal of 1.4 trillion acre feet of water
And this kind of development is in the works and growing unchecked in Wyoming and in several of the states across the intermountain West.
That is what Trout Unlimited is fighting. See: http://publiclands.tu.org/
