I dont palmer the hackle across the body, although that might not be a bad idea. I throw in a few wraps at the head of it, usually making it quite thick. I like how it looks with thick hackle, rather than sparse.
Honestly, the red wing is something I added. Not originally, I'm sure, but I like how that looks. Does it get me more strikes and hook ups? Maybe not...but I think it looks better that way. I actually havn't tried the fly out WITHOUT a wing. Sometimes I'll use a white wing with a few strands of Pearl Krystal Flash just for something new.
If I wieght my flies down, I will use an Orange Hackle tail instead of a red. Just something to tell me it's a wieghted fly. Good luck, glad I could be a little help. if you need anything else, let us know. I'm not an expert on anything but I give what I can.
