Lefty's Deceiver is on of my favorite flies and I tie it frequently. I learned how to tie it from
a local guide, Steve Bailey, who ties the pattern for Lefty when Lefty puts a picture in a book.

The trick is like Byard said. You use nice wide saddle hackle of similiar size, 3-4 curving left 3-4 curving right.
you cup the 2 sets together with tips lined up. If a feather does not lay down right throw it out.
Measure to length of hook (1/0- I use 2.5-3" long feathers) then strip the
but section bare that is going to lay on top of the hook shank leaving about 1/4" for the head (also depends on hook size).
I tie in the 6-8 feathers all at once as a feather 'unit'. You can dip them in water I have not had to do so.

Hi-tie....also correct...I use mono thread for fiber flies. Starting with the tail section and move forward top and bottom, sometimes
adding shoulders. For a fuller effect you can also secure in the middle of the bundle and fold back. For fat fish heads tie a hay stack bundle
all around the hook shank at the hook eye and fold back.

Hello,

I am looking for information about 2 different patterns. I am having a hard time tying deceivers using saddle hackles. The stems are real weak and the feathers don't look right on the fly. Is there any special tricks in tying deceivers? Also I am looking for instructions for tying flies using the Hi-Tie method using Enrico Fiber, or Near hair. Are there any sites that offer Fly Patterns without haveing to use a credit card?

Thanks..

Rick
