Could it be perhaps that your hooks are breaking due to the way you are
smashing the barb, A little something I picked up from Lefty K. in one of
his Bass Pro Shop video's is that you should use pliers and never place
them across the barb, but rather align them with the shank of the hook
and then pinch the barb down, The idea being you don't stress the metal
as bad. When I saw it, it made perfect sense.
