Richard,
One of the advantages of starting with the (poly) wing post is that it is easier to 
cut and tie down the ends to a taper. After that, tie in tails, and dub the body up to 
the post. That way you don't have to go back and forth with the thread more than once, 
and this produces much nicer bodies.
