I genarally make the post by taking the yarn, folding it in on the thread and sliding it down to the hook shank. Take several wraps and then as Henk said, make a good thread base. I also tie in the post as Henk does on some flies. It depends on what I am tying.

*This message was transferred with a trial version of CommuniGate(tm) Pro* I have a question about tying a parachute on a fly. When starting with a hook then tying in the wing and then the hackle?? Or should I start with the tail and body then the wing and hackle??
The answer does indeed depend on the person. I personally start with the wing, then the hackle. Stand the wing up, and make a thread base on the lower 3 mm of the wing post. Oh BTW, if you bought any parachute tools, ditch them. They only get in the way, and if you prepare your wing post with a good thread base (optionally reinforced with some cement), you won't need it anyway. Strip the base of the feather, and tie in in front of the wing, butt pointing forward, tip of the feather pointing to the hook bend. Wrap back. When you get to the wing post, angle the feather up, parallel to the wing, and secure to the wing, over the entire length of the thread base. Bring the thread down again and finish the fly, starting, in most patterns, with the tails, rib and abdomen. Wrap the hackle last, wrapping down, then tie off on the wing post, between the hackle collar and the body of the fly.
