Mike,
To me, it is more like a woven stone fly body. The weave is L---- L---. Different color combinations can be used. Bob uses black and clear. In the clear he pulls a strand of Pearl Kristal Flash through the tube.
He took five smallies on the River Witch and I took five smallies on the Chili Pepper. He took a large Carp and I got a bunch of slab Brim and a real nice Rock bass. Bob fishes the River Witch exclusively on Crooked Creek.

Tony,

I don't think I have seen the River Witch. What is the pattern for that?

Three of us took some nice Smallies on the Chili pepper and River Witch
today and yesterday.

All you really need are some wooly buggers in olives and browns, or

everything you can imagine.

Any thoughts on a worthy crawfish pattern? I'm a middle weight when it

comes

to tying, and many crawfish patters are just too complicated for me. I

want

to be able to tie flies, and still have some time to actually fish!

Don't forget leeches! You may get a walleye or two to boot

I used wooly buggers and clouser minnows for years. I'd catch a few.
My
friends who use spinning rods with plastic worms catch about 4 to my
1 and
they catch bigger fish. I'm competitive enough that it bothers me.
(I know,
see a therapist.)

But last year I didn't get to go out until July or August.
I used nothing but a bullet head grasshopper imitation. I fished the
shadows
only. I had a great time. I caught maybe 6 bluegill for every bass,
but I
was generally active all day long. And I caught bigger bluegill than
the 4"
plastic worms drag in.

I've only fished twice this spring/summer, and I didn't get as much
action.
Last weekend I caught about 4 smallies from 8-10" and a friend
caught about
8 12" smallies with plastic worms in the same 4 hour stretch. But I
caught
more bluegill.

 Hello Listers,
I have been flyfishing for trout for about 10 years. I
travel
all over the state in pursuit of all species of trout indigenous to
this
locale
-- my favorite being the small, native Brook Trout. They are very
challenging
to catch and loads of fun on a 2/3 wt. rod. However, my craving for
something
new has led me back to a couple of great smallmouth rivers right at
my back
door. I have had great success spinning for these fish, but little
success
with
the long rod. Any hardcore Smallie fisherman on the List? I am
looking for
some "favorite patterns," rigging info or just some good advice for
a
beginner.
I have been tying for about 8yrs., so please share some of your
patterns if
you feel like doing so.
                                Thanks, VaFlycaster
