Nick,
I was just asked this question yesterday at work(bass pro shops)  Apply it 
to your line and then run it through a dry cloth before re-spooling it.  
This will take off all the excess and clean/treat your line in one step.  I 
havnt used the product before but the guys in the fly shop say it's great.
