Mly favorite black gnat pattern is a Spring black
thread: purple (yes..purple)
Hook: standard dry fly, size 18
Tail: black pheasant, three fibers
Body, that same black pheasant fiber wound with the purple thread to the
thorax.
Thorax, a tiny bit of black dubbing on the 16 and 18, none on the smaller
sizes.
Wing:: black starling (or if you don't have starling, use a JV black)
Head: the purple thread.
This is a great and very effective fly. I simply fling it out into the river
and mend as it floats downsteam in the surface film.  It is one of my go to
flies. Joyce
