I have to admit that I rather like the split wing on dry flies.  It is a bit hard to get the hang of.  If you are having a hard time of it Ronan try using Mallard wing feathers rather than starling.  The peices you cut are a little longer and therefore a little easier to work with.  Give it a bash.  Sometimes when I'm lazy I will leave the wing out but I have to admit when I reach into my fly box I tend not to select these flys.  I always go for the one with the wing.  Maybe it's just look but I prefere this type of fly.

Subject: [VFB] VFB To Wing or not to Wing

I know that I have seen this discused before somewhere but just as it comes into my head.............do you feel it necessary to wing your dry flies??, I have a problem with the traditional dryfly wing slips (usually starling) and tend to leave them out. Now I dont catch that many trout, so I cannot really tell whether or not it makes a difference or not.

Any thoughts??

Ronan.

One of my most favorite fishing flys is a black mosquito.
I tie it only on size 16,18 or 20, Daiichi 1190.
thread black 8/0
tail = Black hackle fibers (dry fly hackle)
Rib = fine silver wire
Body = Black floss (single strand)
Wing = JV hen cape hackle, tied in down wing style (I think the round end
hen makes better wings)
Hackle = Black dry fly hackle, some I hackle liberally for fast water,
sparsely for more calm water.

Normal pattern I use Grizzly for tail,wings and hackle.

If you want a step by step as I tie it I will be happy to do so for you, off
list cuz I do not want to get lengthy and take up band width.
