I'm a kayaker as well. In fact I'm getting ready to hit the Keys for a
weekend of kayaking & flyfishing! Yay!

Same thoughts as Deb, bright colored kayak. Also, bright colored paddles.
Kayaks sit so low that sometimes they can't be seen regardless of their
color. Those paddles can stick up in the air though. I have bright orange
aquabound seaquels and my wife has bright yellow aquabound seacludes. They
really do make a difference in visibility. I also have a "sunset fade"
(red/orange/yellow but really tie-dyed orange) ocean kayak drifter. My wife
has a red perception swing.

I don't see a lot of float tubes down here in South Florida. Jet skiers,
powerboats, sharks, barracuda, gators & crocs seem to work against them.

I do carry a whistle with me when I'm kayaking. I also have a hand held
GPS/Radio.
I don't see a lot of float tubes here. I personally wouldn't think it was
safe in the salt. We don't see a lot of sharks but the boaters and jet
skiers are nuts. I see more fishermen in kayaks. I kayak a lot. I'm
looking at a Wilderness Tarpon rigged for fishing for my next boat. I stay
out of the boat lanes as much as possible but I still get them passing me in
the harbor and on the rivers at full throttle. Very few people with
boating manners here. It may be a lack of education in boating safety.
They completely ignore the no wake rules inside the harbor. That's tough
when you're in a kayak I wouldn't want to be in a float tube.
I skipped buying the Tarpon last week because they only had the steel blue
color in stock and it doesn't show up on the water. Too dangerous here.

Thanks Deb.
Deb there have been a few times when I would like
to have caught a Jet Ski or two with a big honking
Bass bug lure. Hate the things myself,
or maybe the absent minded drivers.

Out here in California we are required to carry a
whistle as part of our safety gear when fishing,
float tubing, it does seem pointless at times,
You have a 1000 pound boat at full blast and you
in your teeny tiny float tube, blowing your
whistle does almost nothing. You blow it until you
no can longer blow it at all because you are
hoarse form fear.

Deb I am not sure if you float tube?
But do you feel, is safe to float tubing in the
channels, Harbors,
or Bays inlets the inland parts of the Ocean.
