I can understand that. When I was in the Coast Guard I had a friend on board ship who would tie while underway. He would bring all of his materials for tying just 3 flies. One of the shops sold them, (about $3 or 4 apiece I think), and they were killer flies for the Chesapeake bay area. When he was off watch and had time he would sit on the mess deck and tie. He had pre packaged boxes at home so that if he was running out of materials his wife could mail them out and he would get them on the next port call or mail run. Each box had just the materials he needed to continue. I saw him tie probably 40 or 50 flies at one sitting. When we got back in port he would have them all packaged up in the various sizes and take them down to the shop and collect his money. It was a nice side business for him.
I can set and tie maybe 10 of one fly in a sitting and keep them the same, but it takes discipline to do it. I am getting better though if I put my mind to it and stay focused. Jimi Jimi, You've hit on something that separates the professional comercial flytier from the rest. One of the attributes of a good professional tier is the ability to make any number required of identical and correctly size-proportioned flies. This is not as easy as it seems, nor is it a skill achieved overnight. It takes organization, patience, a good eye, skill, and persistence. If you can tie 1, 2, 3 dozen flies all so identical you can't tell one from another, you have what it takes. If you can change sizes and do the same thing, you have what it takes. It takes more than that, and Joyce can probably add a lot to what I said as far as details. Iffin ya don't, that's okay too. Experimentation, creativity, and innovation is how all those flies came to be in the first place.
