Mark,
Let me add to that. Drill a hole through the base if one, slip it on a fishing lanyard. It will hold small flies when you are tying them on to a tippet. After the tippet is threaded through the eye, use the clip to reach through the tippet loop and catch the tag end to make the knot. For us old toots that can't see anymore, it works great. It also can be used like half hitch tool to pull a tag end if a tippet through the loops.
Now OT. I have become a GREAT GRANDPOP again this morning, A boy 8 lb.. 6 Oz. 20" long.
This is # 4

Tony's comment about micro clips reminded me how useful they can be. The ones
I use are the smallest version that Radio Shack sells. Instead of the serrated
"alligator clip" jaws, these have flat, smooth jaws. I use them to hold
materials when tying numerous flies. They're especially good to hold tailing
materials like fibetts or hackle fibers. It's much quicker to cut 30 tails at
the same time and hold each in a separate clip.

Since the jaws are flat, I found it helpful to glue a small piece of craft foam
to one of the jaws. This gives a much more secure grip to the clip.

I don't have the clips mounted to anything since that's not necessary when
holding materials, but thanks for mentioning it because that opens up a variety
of other uses.

I have a row of them on a strip of oak attached to the front of my tying station that I use for tying at shows. It makes it handy to pull one out with a fly and hand it to the attendee to view. I also put flies that have each step tied on them so the attendee can look at each step it takes to tie the fly. These are great for displaying flies though hard to find and cost more than I like to pay for them. Cheap Tony again. LOL
