"There comes a time in the life of every fly fisherman when using midges is a necessity if one wants to catch trout. At one time the term "midge" was used only to describe the tiny Diptera insects, and midge patterns were specifically designed to imitate them. Now we use the term loosely to describe not only the Diptera, but just about any relatively small fly, regardless of what it imitates. Charlie Fox calls it " The Art of Diminution", Vince Marinaro called it "Pretty Fishing".
