I should have put a "disclaimer" along with my quote for today.  First, I've never owned a "telephone pole" fly rod.  I carefully inspect each fly rod before purchasing it.  Then, if the proprietor will let me, I put a reel / line on the rod and go outside and cast it. This is the only way I'll know for sure if I like a rod. If they won't, I leave with the understanding that I'll bring it back if it doesn't perform once I string it up.   Of the 20 + fly rods I own, none are what I'd call "discount store" models.  The closest I ever came to that was a spin cast / fly rod combo, with travel pak,  that was given to me years ago.  I used it once, but didn't  like the way it handled.  The cork was entirely too long and seemed to mess with the balance of the rod. The ferrule joints stood out like sore thumbs and the rod had no feel at all.  I wound up putting it in my wife's garage sale.  I think she got $2.00 for it.
