You should try casting one of the $39.99 "complete" fly fishing set ups 
from XYZ-Marts.  They cast like a 2 x 4.  My wife bought one of those 
before we met.  Switching her to a real fly rod immediately helped her 
casting, presentation, and enjoyment.  The old rod looks better suited for 
catfishing.  It's for sale, cheap.
