I've used deer hair dubbing two different ways:  1.  I chopped it up and mixed it with 
finer dubbing that carried it onto the thread, and 2.  I did it the "magic tool" way, 
which is to say, I clamped some hair of the length I wanted in a bulldog clamp, and 
inserted it in a split thread, or in a dubbing loop, and twisted it into a brush.  
This results in more of a hackle type effect, and can be trimmed to shape.  It helps 
to have a table to support the thread while you stuff in the hair.  The chopped up 
hair made a good looking, spikey body that's softer than just the plain dubbing.
