I recently read "Presenting the Fly," by Lefty Kreh, who was in on the development of the Clouser, and he published a modification that seems to work. He just dresses the side of the hook that rides up, which is to say, the bottom of the hook. You'd still need to pierce the bunny strip to attach it, but you'd have a much less bulky fly.
