Thanks for the recomendations - solder is out, and the toobies and Dinsamore 
splitshots sound good for on the leader, but is there anything that is 
lead-free for wrapping the hook prior to tying?

It's density is only marginally greater than copper ( about 7% more ).  So it's
not a good substitute because it's only slightly heavier and then you have the
lead pollution factor back into the equation.
