I agree with Murf.  I would think 10 max to start.  Until he learns to recognize hatches, seasons, temperature, time of day, etc., it is easier to give them some basics that will catch fish.  I would make the box specific to where he would be fishing.  When I started my son-in-law, I filled his box with flies that I knew caught fish on the Provo since that is where we were going to start.  Hope this helps.
