Ken - 

You're right to assume that CdC and cul-de-canard are the same thing.  You can
dub it tight or loose like most materials, but one really effective way is to
'touch dub' it.  Use a highly tacky wax and just pat the fibers on the thread
so you get a bunch of wavy tendrils when it's wrapped.  CdC moves great in the
water and is a real attention getter.
