I'll take a run at this. When I first tried fly
fishing 4 1/2 years ago, I was hooked instantly.
Started buying all kinds of stuff including a couple
hundred flies. One of my buddies who had encouraged me
was surveying the damage and remarked "before you know
it you'll be tying your own flies". No way, I say. I
have no interest, I can get perfectly good flies at
the store. 2 months later, I stop at a big national
book store in town that was having a one day
half-price on up to 5 books sale. I'm just looking to
pick up Christmas gifts. On the way to the cookbook
section, I run into a local dentist who's son I
coached in hockey. Hey, what kind of books did you
score? He has 5 fly tying books in his arms. Starts
telling me about fishing trips and asks if I tie. No,
not my bag of tea. The normally mild mannered dentist
gets this wild look in his eyes and says "You can't
imagine the rush of catching a fish on a fly that you
tied." It was almost cultlike, the expression in his
face. Next thing I know, a fly tying kit was on my
Christmas list that my wife forces me to make. I don't
know what made me take it up other than the look on
Dr. Vincent's face. I was just hooked.

Although, I'm not very good at tying, I enjoy it for
a number of reasons. First, the opportunity to catch
that fish with your own tie. Secondly, I've never been
artistic or handy with tools, but connect to tying
because it relaxes me. It gives me a creative outlet.
I have no expectations of results. Third, it keeps me
connected to the fish when I can't be
fishing,especially the trout. Fourth, I think it's
very cool. Non fishing friends will look at those tiny
things and think you're some kind of wizard or
something. You know the look: "You can actually catch
a fish on that little thing?" Fifth, I'm not
restricted to what's in the bins at the flyshop. To
make this a six-pack of reasons: You don't have any
clue when you start tying that a simple hobby could
put you in a position to meet so many really neat
people. Found my way to this mail list and met a bunch
of cool cyber-friends. Some folks think you're nuts
when you tell them that you're driving to Arkansas to
spend the weekend with a bunch of people that you met
on the internet, I'm talking sharing living quarters.
Just an overwhelmingly fun experience. Some friends
for life, I'm sure.

Well, that's one guy's answer to a seemingly simple
question. Nice thread, Mark. -Jayhawk Jeff
