[VFB] All purpose Rod

I've got a friend at work who is looking to get into fly fishing. He wants 
to get an all purpose rod that can handle everything from bluegill and 
little trout to carp and Great Lakes Steelhead. I was guessing a 5-6 wt 
around 8.5 - 9 ft. Any other suggestions or am I pretty much on the mark? 
Also, any help on reels and line would also be helpful. Thanks!
