Lizs sister Ann and two boys, ages 11 & 9 are visiting me this weekend. Ann is a surgical Nurse over in Seattle so I do not get to see them often but did start both boys fly-fishing 5 years ago. The two girls went into Spokane today to do girl things, whatever that is and I had the two boys all to myself for the day. Having two daughters around at the same time sure does wonders in my kitchen! We took off about 8 AM and went to one of my favorite small lakes that has wild Rainbows in it. Not a difficult place to fish but presents a few challenges. It is only about a 20-minute drive from the ranch and the boys were bubbling with anticipation. Will, the oldest chose a Chili pepper from my chest pack (left his flies that I had tied for him for Christmas at home). Still has not mastered tying on the fly so Grandpa had to assist. Then off he went to wet a line. I was setting Ben up with one of my good rods and he was selecting a fly when I heard Will holler ""Fish on". I glanced up and as he was only about 30 yards away, hurried over to net his 16" very fat Rainbow. Was caught on his first cast! The smile on his face and the look in his eyes were something I would love to share. We quickly took a photo while still in the net and he easily slipped the barbless out of the corner of Mr. Bows mouth and off he swam. Ben had to try several different flies during the couple hours we fished but just could not hook up. Our last outing he caught the most fish with the number being 3, so I heard him mention to his brother that it was good to take turns in catching. I seriously did not believe him. Old proud Grand pa managed to bring 2 bows to hand. One a 10" and the other a very scrappy tail dancing 12"er. Both of mine fell to one of my old standbys, a PMD tied the old way with the mallard flank post and dark barred ginger hackle. We did not catch large numbers of fish and were only out for a few hours but it was a memorable day for all three of us. As we were driving home Ben asked if we were going to get to go fishing tomorrow? We plan to fish another small pond tomorrow and then run the Spokane River in the canoe on Sunday. Fuzzy and I will man the canoe with the boys only riding along. Of course there are a couple spots on the Spokane where I know live a few large browns and my 5wt will go along. Take a boy fishing.
