Well, this answers a question about the bamboo that was on my late brothers
land, ands the canes I call it on my daughters land.. The stuff on my
brothers land would grow up OVER 50 ft tall, and3-5 inches in diameter at
the base.. You could actually HEAR it growing on a still summer night over
there.. it would grow up to a fot a day.. he had several owners of Asian
resturants come there and ick the very young bamboo shoots to go in their
food...The "cane" as I call it on my daughters land, hardly ever reaches
over 20 feet, and about 1 1/4" diameter is the biggest it gets.. Most are
10-12 ft, and we hang them upside down in big oak trees with a weight tied
on the end so it will dry straight, then, take the dried stuff and go over
it with a hand held propane torch.. Then shellac it (I think this is what
all we did, cause it was when I was a kid when Daddy did all this).. Anyway,
he'd then put an eyelet on th esmall end, and sell the "cane poles" to bait
shops around here.... So it is a totally different species to make fly
rods????? I was wondering about that... Thanks , Chuck
BTW, the orientals woul dmake a flute type instrument out of the big stuff
that grew at my brothers.. Can't remember what they calle dit, but the
Chinese name I could not even pronounce anyway LOL
